The mouth is the mirror of our health!

"What do diseases look like in the mouth? What are the symptoms of cancer?"

EKPA Professor Dr. Ourania Nicolatou-Galitis had the honor and great pleasure to present "what systemic diseases look like in the mouth" on Pemptousia TV.  She was invited by Dr. Stavroula Zorzou. Dr Zorzou is a Dentist, Writer and Musician and producer of the show Akou File.

Dear Dr. Zorzou, thank you very much for the honor and the opportunity to contribute to your work and to present important facts about the health of our fellow human beings.

We talked about the special signs that are found in our mouth and indicate a disease in another area of our body without being yet visible. In these cases, the tongue and mouth may ache, sting, be dry, the taste is altered, etc. Diseases such as anaemia, stomach and intestinal problems, leukemia, AIDS, cancer can be diagnosed early, if we "listen" to our mouth and visit the dentist!

We talked about fungal infections in the mouth that may be the first symptom of another serious condition. We talked about anaemia, which often makes the tongue look red and may indicate eating disorders and diseases in other places, but also a tumor that bleeds in some place in our body, such as in the intestine.

In the mouth we see other local problems, such as cold sores and other diseases and oral cancer, as well. The severity and urgency of oral cancer requires that we all be alert! It is important to know that oral cancer in the first 4-8 months does not cause pain!

Cancer in the mouth can seem like a wound that does not heal, a tooth that is mobile for no apparent reason, a "swelling" in the mouth or throat, difficulty swallowing. A white plaque, called leukoplakia, can be a risk factor for developing oral cancer.

We talked about smoking, which is the leading cause of cancer, and HPV which is another cause of oral cancer, the HPV vaccine, and other factors that can help prevent oral cancer.

Do you have discomfort, or do you see something in your mouth that is bothering you? Visit the Dentist! A dentist is the most suitable to see your mouth!

Concluding the presentation, we emphasized the role of lifestyle in the occurrence of cancer.
